Upon return to school, children with behavior needs may have...
a. Exacerbation during removal due to isolation, anxiety, trauma, lack of routine b. Difficulty with transition back, especially if the new environment differs (alternate days, new buildings, different staff) c. Compensatory education and remedial needs
It is critical that advocates and school staff are aware and plan for that probability that the transition back will require additional services, more staff time for planning and meeting, more patience with behavioral exacerbation at school, and a need to be careful not to involve law enforcement so that this pandemic does not result in an epidemic of arrests and suspensions. In addition, children who were suspended at the time of pandemic removal #1 should be given credit for time out . How can we make sure this occurs?
