88% of parents affirm that they decide together with their children what to eat for breakfast, admitting that sometimes they give in to children's preferences
A study by Kellogg's Choco Krispies reveals what the main challenges are in terms of the habits and concerns of Spaniards regarding family breakfast. The survey was carried out by the market research agency More Than Research Group and had the participation of 1,350 Spanish families with children between 6 and 15 years old.
The most valued by 72% of parents is that food is healthy, nutritious and helps to follow a balanced diet. Despite the fact that breakfast is one of the good times of the day, according to 97% of the parents surveyed, it generates some disagreements between parents and children
And it is that while the parents worry about the quality of the breakfast, taking care both that the environment is positive and of good spirit (53%) and the nutritional aspect (34%); their children are more interested in having what they like and that the food is rich (62%).
Parents give in to their children
The study shows that the dispute is almost always resolved with agreements, since 88% of parents affirm that they decide together with their children what to eat for breakfast, admitting that they sometimes give in to children's preferences.
The psychologist specializing in psychoeducation and university teacher, Úrsula Perona, supports the attitude of the parents, pointing out that "experts recommend that eating does not become a source of conflict, since this can be even more counterproductive. It would be ideal to enjoy breakfast without problems and with the family ".
"Lonely" breakfasts
And it is that with whom the moment of breakfast is shared is another of the questions addressed by the research. Only one in three families surveyed affirms that they always eat breakfast as a family, although 77% of the children think that if they have a good time with their family during breakfast the day will be much better for them.
To the point that the majority of children (59%) prefer to have breakfast accompanied by their family, even if this means having to give up watching TV or playing with the tablet or mobile phone. The survey results also show that 6 out of 10 parents admit to letting their children watch television or use technological devices during breakfast, although the majority (49%) only on special occasions or weekends.
According to Úrsula Perona, "even with less technology at the table at breakfast time, we will turn a moment of isolation into a moment of family life and communication." The expert adds that "when our children turn 10-12 years old it seems that parents relax and take an educational nap, we think we have everything done. However, it is one of the stages in which they need us most. That, taking care of breakfast time should still be important at that age. "
